Finely detailed c. 1930s to 1940s postcard of the log blockhouse at Fort Edgecomb, located on Davis Island in the Sheepscott River near Wiscasset, Maine. Built in 1806, Fort Edgecomb was built to protect coastal Maine and vital shipping interests in Wiscasset, which was once the most important shipping center north of Boston. The blockhouse, situated at the fort's highest point, contained a watch tower, musket ports and rectangular openings on eight sides to provide ample views and protection of every land and water approach. It saw action in both the War of 1812 and the Civil War. Published b J. D. Alexander of Damariscotta, postmarked in 1951, and a desirable Lincoln County or military collectible in excellent condition.
