Great graphics in this unused c. 1964 postcard of cultural icon Carol Doda of San Francisco, California. Seated here on a psychedelically-patterned pillow, Doda displays her silicone-enhanced 44D "Twin Peaks." Doda worked as a topless waitress at the Condor Night Club, at 300 Columbus Ave. in the North Beach section of San Francisco. She made cultural history on June 19, 1964, when she performed a topless dance at the age of 19 or 20. Doda's act began as a grand piano was lowered from the ceiling; she stood on top of it and did a go-go dance of the Swim, followed by dancing to the Twist, the Frug and the Watusi. Her act proved so popular that she was soon performing 12 shows a night. Within two months, the rest of Broadway had gone topless, followed shortly by strip clubs across America. Doda was profiled in author Tom Wolfe's 1968 book, The Pump House Gang. In the late-1960s and throughout much of the 1970s, she was the spokeswoman for San Jose, California television station KICU-TV (then known as KGSC-TV). Doda retired from strip clubs in the 1980s and manages "Carol Doda's Champagne and Lace Lingerie Boutique" in San Francisco. A desirable California or burlesque collectible in excellent condition.
