Nicely detailed c. 1940s postcard of the Whitley County jail and sheriff's house in Columbia City, IN. Designed by architect J. C. Johnson, who was an architect known for his Indiana court house designs, and built in 1875, the Whitley County jail is in the Second Empire architectural style and features a mansard roof with elaborate dormers and carved sandstone details. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Whitley County jail is considered by the Indiana Historic Landmarks Foundation to be one of the 10 most endangered historic structures in the Hoosier state. Empty since 1985, the old jail is used as a commercial haunted house at Halloween for just one day a year. Postmarked in 1944, and a desirable Whitley County or penology collectible in very good condition.
